Key Traits of Quality Rainwater Tank Coating

As a farm manager, your role is to ensure operations in the farm run as smoothly as possible. Part of that is making sure there is always enough water for farm use. However, declining freshwater sources have made water such an invaluable resource, and that is why commercial farms are turning to large rainwater tanks. Not only do they offer a reprieve during non-rainy seasons, but rainwater also reduces farm operating costs for commercial farmers. However, when buying a rainwater tank, it is crucial to get one with a protective inner lining which protects both the water and tank. This article highlights a few characteristics of protective lining in rainwater tanks.

Odourless Lining

One of the first signs of a quality rainwater tank inner coating is the absence of odour. Commercial farms are required by law to grow and harvest produce that is safe for human consumption. It means water used on farms should be safe and free of contaminants. Therefore, if you take a whiff of the inside of a rainwater tank and you get a strong smell, then the chances are that the coating compounds will mix with the stored water. Consequently, it will affect the quality of water and farm produce. On the other hand, if you don't smell anything, then it is an indication that the coating is odourless and free of contaminants.

Roller-Applicable

Traditionally, rainwater tank coating was accomplished using complicated and expensive component application equipment and specialized techniques. It meant that when the coating wore off, you had to take the water tank to the manufacturer for recoating. Not only is this method expensive, but it also affects the water supply to the farm. The coating that can be applied with a simple brush or roller is an excellent choice because you do not need a professional to recoat. All you have to do is get the right type of coating, a brush or roller, and you can recoat all the rainwater tanks you have on the farm. Therefore, ask a seller about the technique which is used to apply the coating on a rainwater tank.

Flexible Coating

Since most farms store rainwater tanks above ground, farm managers should understand the effect this has on the tank as well as the coating. Steel expands and contracts depending on the current external temperatures. If the coating used remains rigid throughout the day regardless of the changes, the tank will likely crack and expose the steel to corrosion. Quality coating should be flexible enough to accommodate the expansion and contraction of steel tank during high and low temperatures, hence keeping the tank in excellent condition for a long time.
